New Chinese Experience

May 2009 : New Chinese Experience has now closed down

You may laugh but this is my favourite restaurant in Soho. The thing is that it encompasses all the most and least sought after values that Chinatown holds so dear. It’s cheap, it’s fast, half the food is unidentifiable and the staff don’t seem to care if you enjoy yourself or not. New Chinese experience is a dim-sum lunch venue for the folk of the new media world, you are led inside and quickly sat at relatively uncomfortable chairs in a very bright room. All around is bustle and chatter and before you, the dim-sum list which you fill out in pencil. The descriptions are so bad that you have to come back a couple of times to work out what dishes you like and after 5times i still get it wrong. Dishes come out pretty quickly with everything from sweet cakes to steamed dumplings, egg rolls, won-ton and noodles in broth and the favourites are very moreish. For less that the cost of pizza you can eat and be full from just picking away and i quickly get through a whole pot of chili oil. So discount is the place that little cards get issued to regulars to bring them back at dinner time.

Overall new Chinese experience is completely an experience, its small dishes are weird and wonderful prepared in the most traditional way by the chefs of old Chinatown, even the tiny little orange balls on the yellow steaming packages are enough to smile at while those around you wince and poke them- 8/10
