The Hole in the Wall Cafe (New Barnet - London)

The Hole in the Wall Cafe

Being the only retail shop and eatery for a good stretch of perhaps a kilometer of a road, you may wonder how such a lonely cafe copes in business. In fact hole in the wall is a famous little cafe because for its regulars (and only customers) it is like eating at home. The restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside, filled with booths and benches with a counter facing the door. Behind it a rather strict landlady serves coffee and breakfast to white van drivers and similar folk with local slang and marked behaviours of joke telling, loud laughs and one of the greasiest meals you ever had. Yes, the feeling is uncomfortable. Yes, its probably supposed to be that way and Yes, the cafe food is as good and in some ways better than competitors further up and down the high street.

Overall the venue is not for newcomers. It feels like its been in the same state for the last 30 years and from outside it hardly looks like a cafe at all. But its well liked by locals and despite feeling uncomfortable it certainly has a lot of character, just not the character your very fond of 3/10
