The Grand Union

A rather plush bar set into one of the most unlikely locations just a stone’s throw from the Forum. This place is very expensive for its location at around £5 for a glass of wine and around £4 for a beer. The decor is alluring however, with not quite a romantic feel but a decadent, vibrant plush indoor arrangement with a tall bar on the right and outside benches play host to the smokers. However there is no cider on tap. The place remains relatively quiet on a week night but has the space to accommodate a small group of people in one of the booths available and suits the upmarket drinkers who fancies themselves for a bit of class it what might-verge on a Gastro-pub.

Overall for a classy drink not too far from the station you could certainly-do a lot worse. I feel that despite the price this place offers comfort and quality, probably the closest bar to Kentish town tube of its kind and kept well that way - 7/10

My girlfriend and I decided to have a leaving party there as we are moving away to foriegn soil, and after spending a great new year there, it seemed the perfect venue. All was great in the build up, very friendly and available to help……. until the evening in question. We were told that it closed at midnight and cocktails were available. The staff on duty that night were incapable of making cocktails (20min wait in some cases) and on top of that, half way through the evening we were informed that all of a sudden as it was ‘Good Friday’ they would be closing at 10.30! My girlfriend and I were promptly left in the street with 30 other guests wondering what to do and where to go next - my advice a great place to eat a burger and have a beer - just not if you plan on inviting more than yourself…….

I recently went to the grand union and was happy to hear it was under new management, we went on a Friday at about 7pm and the place was really good, dj’s playing funk and soul with some rock and indie thrown in for good measure. The new manager was a great host and told me he had replaced a load of staff and changed the music policy. Saturdays are now a rockabilly night with private events on downstairs and they are showing films on Sunday. Definitely worth a look as we had a great night.
