The Famous Royal Oak

Hidden from any sign of of the civilisation at the top of muswell hill this pub somewhat retains a crowd. As you approach there are two outdoor televisions on a large outdoor terrace. Some of the area is under cover and in the summer one can expect fresh BBQ food. Inside is an old style friendly family run pub with several machines and a pool table. There are classic characters within which help liven the place up and it remains very friendly. There are mainly middle aged men in here - often attracted by sports matches.
This has to be one of the friendliest pubs I have ever been in, the landlord even brings out chairs for the ladies when none seem available and there are none of the “rudeboys” associated with the pubs at the top of the hill. Overall 8/10

This guy Pete, if that’s his name, has obviously been barred from this wonderful pub as the Landlord is probably one of the last gentlemen left on this planet!

One of my favourite pubs in London. Always receive a great welcome, brilliant atmosphere, highly recommended. Go and see for yourself!

Pete - you are an idiot and would not know a good pub if it bit you on a**e. I am glad I will never see you in the Oak

This was the first pub I ever went in when I came to Live in London in 1975. Since that time I don’t think it has ever been better than it is at the moment. There is a great atmosphere. It is spotlessly clean and in my opinion, although I could no longer be counted as a regular, as I now live some distance away, is exceptionally well run. Not many pubs have such a wide range of newspapers available for their customers on a daily basis. When I dropped by with a friend when we were out walking with my dog one Sunday, while I waited outside on the terrace my dog was brought a bowl of water by a friendly barmaid before my friend had returned with my own drink. Not a pub that is easily matched for many miles around.

I grew up in Muswell Hill in the 1940’s & 50s. I used to use the Royal Oak in the 1960s and 70s when on leave from the Royal Navy, and now, on the odd occasion that I am in London (I now live in Aberdeen) I pop in for a pint. It has been a great pub for a long time now, and such pubs are hard to find.

Me and my friends were regulars here in the early 70s. We used to walk down with my neighbour Buzz and Krishna his afghan hound. Rod Stewart was often in there, plus other characters. Brill pub then. I moved away 1973 but we are having a Muswell Hill reunion on Saturday (6th April 2011), so will definitely be visiting the Royal Oak to see how much it has changed.
