The Malt and Hops

A traditional pub with pool table, well stocked bar and very friendly bar staff, has a flavour of Barnet’s old Green Man in it with the small fluorescent signs on the bar highlighting the bottles on offer. At the back end is a dart board and the tables are assorted of the wooden variety. At £2.80 a pint and £2.50 a shot and mixer it is a little expensive for a pub this far north and this far from a tube station. The sections of the pub are separated by stain glass, which has obviously been broken in places where it is missing. Thinking about it and looking around it does feel dodgy. All the clientele appear to be congregated, although they are of different ages and hanging on each other in a sort of uneasy gang-like brotherhood felt easily by the outsider. It feels like a fight could very easily kick off in here but my attention is turned to the couple of TVs showing the sport.

Despite the uneasy feeling it is generally a very pleasant pub and a decent size within with a comfortable pub-like feel even if the “naughty boys of finchley” really do “operate” in here. Overall 6/10.

Sorry if the pub feels like it could be a dodgy place; in fact the Guvnor keeps one of the tightest ships in North Finchley - any trouble leads very quickly to a barring (so there’s never any trouble). The Naughty Boys of Finchley is merely a drinking club for some sad old gits (I know, I’m one of them :-) ), not a Cray-like organisation with tentacles stretching as far away as, oh, maybe Woodhouse Road. We also do some money-raising for concerns like the North London Hospice. I agree about the price of a pint though (although the pub isn’t really that far from Woodside Park Tube). There’s also some reasonable live music on, see http://nbof.org/malt/events.htm

    Cheers

The so-called reviewer “Greg” is an arsehole. You can’t pop into a pub once in your life and write a review. I’ve read other reviews of his and, apart from the fact concerning his poor standard of writing and crap spelling - he gets most things wrong.
