Ye Olde Mitre Pub

I raise my hand and admit I had to be led to this pub. It is sandwiched between a church and high rise modern buildings, claiming to be a five hundred year old tavern and every sense of the place supports this claim. The Ye Olde Mitre has a collection of black barrels outside which continue around a cover side alley and down to the back of the venue’s exterior. Inside the pub is made up a around 3 bars, each one is tiny enough to accommodate onto a handful of people. There is a good selection on tap and behind the bar and the bar staff are fast. The clientele to expect are those that know the place, locals, middle aged folk in home-knitted jumpers chortling and cradling their beer. The venue is also riddled with tales of the pub’s ancient history and it really is a marvel to stand outside and look up in disbelief at how this place has survived the very obvious intimidation of modern capitalism.

Overall the Mitre is a great little pub, touches like the “outhouse” effect of the toilets and original interior really make this one of the great old bars probably in the whole country and yet is a minute’s walk from Holborn circus in full view of the tower blocks of the financial district. A throwback to the years of church-rule and bishops ale - this gets a deserving 7/10
