Monto Water Rats Theatre and Bar

The Water Rats as it is commonly known across the youth of North London is an important addition to the small venue circuit for undiscovered bands and London talent in the instrumental music industry. Literally a five minute walk from Kings Cross station, it is well tucked away as one of the only remnants of nightlife on this strip of road which feels somewhat like a dual carriageway. Entrance fee to get in is pretty standardised yet it feels a little disorganised. Wristbands are served up as markers of entry and within is a comfortabely sized lounge-like bar area. The lounge has some seating across one wall and a bar accommodate the opposing side. The staff are a little hurried and a tad rude, disappointing running out of a number of beverages during the course of an averagely busy evening. The double doors at the back lead into a stag room with dance-floor. The bands are often of good quality and well picked by the venues management. The clientele consist of a young crowd between the ages of about 16 and 25.

Overall a rough and ready venue for young people, bands and talent with a good location, it could serve better as a bar but as a small music venue it hits the spot - 6/10

This place is great for bands and atmosphere. The one major downside is that deciding to go to the toilet is almost as bad a making a choice to descend into hell….rank doesn’t really cover it and sadly it is my lingering memory.

Having played here myself, I can confirm just how very good the sound system and light show are in the band room, not to mention the engineers who operate them.

The bar, on the other hand, is indeed a bit of a disappointment: in my case, they’d run out of draught Bass (despite displaying a pump clip) and had no other ales on that evening. And the loos are grim!
