Meze Bar and Restaurant

Calling a bar by a name that even its bouncers cant pronounce is never a good idea, but it sets the scene for a place where the venue is a little twisted and the crowds thinks they know best. This two unit, double decker venue on the upper shelf of Chester’s town centre offers average priced drinks, a dance-floor on the right side of the bar and a general drinkery- branching to the left upon entrance. It remains quite crowded and of RnB urban stylings the crowds on the dance-floor give each other a little too much attitudinal-eye for comfort. The production of this meets ugly fashion trends with general dickery from the lads. There is a rather interesting steel spiral staircase which lands you drunkenly in the middle of a rather civil restaurant before you find your way to the less-than-appealing loos.

Overall an unsatisfactory 5/10

Me and a large group of friends have been to Meze on a few occasions now and we think it is a great venue. Particularly at the weekend when the tunes/DJ are great and better still there is no entrance fee to get in. The place has a great ambience to it and I love the way that they have sectioned off areas with trendy string curtains to create private booths. All in all a great venue (for eating and drinking/dancing).

do not go to this restaurant, they do not understand the concept of been a restaurant. Valentine days me and my g/f went up for the 3 course offer for 20 quid, we got our starter fine within 15 minutes of sitting down but that was the last portion of food we saw for the rest of the evening.
This is when they just lost the plot, people started complaining, waitresses were just ignoring us and bringing out food for the wrong table then taking it back, the couple behind us just left. No-one came over to apologize, when we did manage to grab a waitress and asked where our food is she never even got back to us. Then the final straw was when we got a bill for someone elses meal. It was a total farce, management just hid downstairs, waitresses clearing the tables but just ignoring us when it was obvious the whole night had become a joke for about 20 couples. I was so mad, my girlfriend was in tears and we never got so much as an apology so we just walked out. In all my life i have never seen such a disgraceful total joke of a restaurant. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

    Hi All,
Just a response to the review made by a very angry Tom.
Firstly to state that i had a very enjoyable meal at New Meze on Valentines day.
We had not previously been to Meze and were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and decor.
Food was also really good, for £19.95 it was such a bargain. Me and my Boyfriend found the service to be excellent the waitresses serving us were excellent .
After we stayed on for the live DJ and cocktails and had a really great night.

With regards to Tom’s negative comments…. on a night such as valentines, especially with Meze being so popular you were bound to be waiting a little longer for your food
I think it’s negative and perhaps aggressive attitudes of customers that can often ruin there own dining experience.
My advice next time Tom is to just relax and enjoy your evening….. You’ll be surprised how far being polite and calm can get you.
We even got a few extra roses at the end of our meal from one of the management (who weren’t hiding downstairs)
To everyone thinking of giving New Meze a test run…. You won’t be disappointed :-)
    x

    Emma

Tell that to the other couples that left and at least 3 other tables made complaints to the management. I don’t think waiting 1 hour and 45 minutes between courses is a little while longer do you?
I wasn’t aggressive to staff we asked calmly twice and nothing appeared, so i think they runined my dining expereince.
I even rang the next day to asked what happened the previous night and no-one rang me back, they know they messed up.

Sorry have to agree with Tom. My boyfriend and I also had a terrible experience there - it may be good for your average drinking lout but if you want a classy night out this is not the place for you!

    march 10th 2009.

we went to meze for my birthday lunch on march 7th, there was 5 of us in total and i’ve never had an experience like it in my life!
to cut a long story short, the drinks came at different intervals. the food took ages. in fact 2 couples walked out and one lady had eaten her lunch before her partners eve arrived, 2 other tables made complaints about waiting and when it did arrive it was overpriced and very average. My poor boyfriends dad paid the bill and out of politeness i woud’nt say anything, it was a real shame as the staff were nice girls. Definately one to aviod.

I think people may be a little unfair to a place that only reopened a few months ago and is finding its feet, becoming a really nice venue for couples and larger private parrties! I also had a great meal on Valentines, we arrived as an earlier booking, were seated immediately, the service was quick and the food was well worth it. I hadn’t been to Meze before but I am so pleased my bf took me there, the rose at the end of the meal was a nice extra for the ladies. I have been a few times since and have enjoyed it, both at lunch and for a drink with a group of friends on the terrace when the sun is out. Every time the staff make a fuss and treat you as a special guest.

I think everyone deserves a second a go. Just because you had one off night you shouldn’t write a place off, everyone has them. You should try it again when everything is in place and it’s not one of the busiest nights of the year (when every business struggles even long established ones, never mind new ones). Then you can really comment.

It is a wonderful venue and cosy inside, you should go in for a drink and make your own mind up:) I did and I’ll be going there throughout the Summer! Enjoy it.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

I went there with friends for a Birthday, there were 18 of us, we had upstairs to ourselves! Ther staff had decorated it with balloons, banners, loads of things that made it look so nice! No where else in Chester would let us have balloons!

They made a special 3 course menu just for the Birthday which was amazing and gave the Birthday girl a free glass of bubbly. We had two staff waiting on us all night! At the end of the night we reserved the VIP Turkish Corner and had the DJ on from 9pm! It was a brilliant night!

    LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!

    shit place

  • 10 tom // Apr 9, 2009 at 10:46 am

Gemma, Emma i bet you both work there

even if it is new what happened is no excuse, surely no-one opens a food business without knowing how to serve your customers and it wasn’t busy as there was a max of twenty tables upstairs. I hope it gets shut down. I was glad to be back to Bradford the next day where we know how to serve proper food

after speaking to a few friends i deceided to visit meze for an evening meal last weekend, can i just say the food was fantastic and the atmosphere and service were second to none, i was seated in a cozy corner of a well designed contemporary restaurant, the staff were attentive and quick, i never waited more than 15 minutes for a course. i was more than pleased and cant belive the negative comments

keep up the good work meze and i will be back

I have been and got to say it was lovely. It was race weekend and so busy and although the staff were rushed they were friendly and polite and the 15minute wait for food was worth it, especially being on such a lovely terrace in the sun. The staff work hard to give good service and you can tell. For somewhere that’s not been open long it has got itself together quickly. Be there again next races!

I agree with Tom! I don’t know how a change of management can make such a huge difference but it has!

I used to go to Meze for a meal and a drink with my girlfriend everytime we came to visit my parents. We then found it had closed and were very DISAPPOINTED as it was our favourite place! Imagine our delight when we saw it had re opened, this was short lived! We recently visited the “new” Meze and were horrified! The SERVICE WAS SLOW, we had to ask twice for our drinks, the place looked like it hadn’t been cleaned since it had closed and the staff looked like they didn’t want to be there, but who can blame them! When we finally managed to escape and having asked for our bill ( also twice) we have decided to NEVER GO AGAIN!
We used to be greated by the owner when it was the “old” Meze and made to feel like they actually wanted us to be there,. The atmosphere was amazing and all the staff were smiling and having a great time making me and my girlfriend have a great time too.
“new” meze? BRING BACK THE “OLD” MEZE!!

  • 14 HANNAH // Nov 4, 2009 at 5:44 pm

This is a message to Neil. The old Meze went bust and took all his suppliers with him. I would love to be greeted by him some day. He’s probably got another scam restaurant somewhere else. That’s not what i call good management. The new Meze are doing really well, it takes time for a place to get into the swing of things. They now have a new chef and things are looking good.

Give them a break and don’t bring back the old Meze.

  • 15 neil // Nov 25, 2009 at 6:53 pm

this is a message to Hannah! Do you work there? What do you mean you would like to be greeted by him some day? Haha pathetic! Everyones entitled to an opinion at least mine is based on fact.

  • 16 HANNAH // Dec 7, 2009 at 4:36 pm

This is a messgae to Neil. I do not work there but i know some of the suppliers which he took down when he went bust. I am not trying to be pathetic just making a point based on fact. Grow up and stop complaining about everything. There’s so much more to life, well there is to mine anyway!

  • 17 Neil // Dec 18, 2009 at 11:42 am

Im sorry Hannah, i thought this was a restaurant review page, so i was making a review based on my experience in meze like Tom, Sue and John. You want to be careful making libelous claims on the internet! Also you say “he” there were 3 owners as i recall… There is more to life but you decided to throw ur toys out so im defending my point!

  • 18 Linzie // Jan 24, 2010 at 7:31 pm

We went to Meze on the 23rd of Jan 2010. We waited 15 mins to be sat down and was given the menu, we ordered some drinks and then ordered the Winter Special - Soup and a Sandwich. I received my drink but my mum waited 50 mins for her latte and when it come it was a white coffee. She told them it was wrong and they went away and come back with her latte, they asked if she wanted sugar, she replied yes and we never saw them again. We are now still waiting for our food and also 14 people had already left due to waiting time. So we approached the manager who had asked who had served us, just as the food order had not gone through. Instead of then making it a priority to get are food to us A.S.A.P he did nothing. At this point we had had enough and walked out. We would never go here again. Service was shocking and they couldn’t give a monkeys about the people they were serving.

My boyfriend and I went there for Valentines night and the whole thing was a disaster. We didn’t know Chester so were unsure of where to book and it looked like a nice place. But from the moment we went in it went downhill fast! It took them 40 minutes to bring us a bottle of wine and that was how the pace continued for the rest of the night. It was the first restaurant I have been to where they ask you for drinks without having a wine list or drinks menu anywhere in sight. The starter was ok, very ordinary and plain. I ordered steak for my main course which had a choice of two sauces, but they didn’t even ask me which one I wanted. My boyfriend’s main was such a small portion that I shared mine with him and we both ended up having food later on in the night. Then to the pudding… after waiting for about an hour for this and reminding staff, it never arrived. We were there for 2 hours and 40 minutes in total and were so fed up we left without the pudding.

In fairness one waitress was running around trying to do everything but they seemed completely understaffed and had no order of who was to be served next. Three couples came in after us and had their three courses before our plates from the second course were cleared. We were so annoyed that I refused to pay the full amount, definitely don’t bother!
